As our industry struggles through a multiplicity of challenges with direct or indirect roots in the COVID-19 pandemic, I think there is value in reinforcing some historical perspective of cattle and beef industry cyclical and infrastructure factors that are exacerbating some of our current issues. To do that, one must harken back almost a decade to the widespread and devastating drought conditions during the summers of 2011 and 2012 when beef cow populations in both Texas and Oklahoma were pared down by 20-25 percent; the liquidation did not stop there.
